Most weekend mornings in The Highlands I find myself waking up with a fear of daylight and a headache. I lie in bed, plotting ways to feed myself without leaving the comfort of the covers. Could I really spend the entire day in here nursing a hangover in total darkness? Do you think IHOP delivers to bedrooms? These were the thoughts that plagued me before I checked out Gallop Cafe in The Highlands.
Gallop Cafe is a reason to rally yourself from your drunken stupor. It is a reason to get out of bed in the morning. The inviting dining area tempts you with a display case of delicious breakfast pastries. One time I ordered my meal, and then while waiting, I ordered a peanut butter bar because I am unable to cope with temptation. Check out the Colorado Breakfast Croissant. I’m not sure what exactly makes it a Colorado Breakfast Croissant but I suspect it has something to do with the avocado. I skipped the avocado (because seriously we need to stop putting avocado on everyting) but man the sandwich was delicious. If you are looking for something a little more gut busting, I recommend the French Hen. It adds potatoes to the croissant breakfast sandwich conversation. And it’s important to be tolerant of other people’s breakfast sandwiches.
As for the drinking scene, it appears to be alive and well. There is a fully stocked bar sitting behind the display case of delicious pastries. It made me wonder why more bars haven’t picked up on this trend. I think luring people in with danishes and then keeping them happy with shots of rum is not the worst idea I’ve ever heard. The Venetian Mimosas (2 for 1 deal during brunch) and Bloody Mary’s are good. Very good. They have an afternoon happy hour from 3pm to 7pm but I have yet to check it out. When I do, I’ll be sure to let everyone know how it is.
If your like me, then you like to eat breakfast with a little bit of alcohol. Even more than this, I like to eat it in the presence of a full bar. Oh yea, and the food is pretty damn good. If you ever find yourself wandering The Lower Highlands with the kind of hangover they make movies about, then make your way over to Gallup Cafe and get some food and a little hair of the dog. It’ll cure what ails ya.
